目前美國有超過500萬華裔美國人。我自己來自舊金山。這個城市本身有超過17萬的華裔美國人。由於他們彼此類似的基因、文化與歷史背景,因而經常也面臨類似的健康威脅。 首先,華裔美國人常常遭遇肝臟問題,例如:肝病、肝癌與B型肝炎。為什麼會造成這種現象呢?產生這種現象的根源在於對肝臟問題的認知度不夠高。歷史上,中國與台灣對肝臟問題的認知度一直很低。因此,很多華裔美國人肝臟發生問題後,熬了很多年,等健康受到威脅的時候,才看醫生。這樣下去,華裔社區肝臟問題的情況越來越嚴重。 其次,華裔美國人常常碰到心血管問題,尤其是高血壓與中風。華裔美國人在基因上對鹽分比較敏感,而且他們高鹽的傳統飲食,對健康的威脅,就更不用說了。許多華裔美國人以為高鹽分沒有那麼危險,不太注意鹽分。因為這個緣故,高鹽分與其所產生的高血壓常常被稱為「隱形殺手」。 再其次,華裔美國人常常出現消化系統的問題。所謂的消化系統問題,指的是胃部的問題、胃癌與第二型糖尿病。由於華裔美國人的平均體重較低,人們可能會以為他們患第二型糖尿病的風險也較低。其實不然。華裔美國人的平均體重固然較輕,可是即使體重正常,他們患第二型糖尿病的風險也很高。何況,他們常感染到幽門螺旋桿菌(H. pylori)等胃炎問題。在感染後,他們很容易出現其他胃部併發症。 作為一位重視身體健康的華裔美國人,除了生活方式以外,最重要的就是進行B型肝炎、高血糖以及高血壓檢測。我們能藉著檢測來判斷他們的風險。其實,我在舊金山中國城做過這樣的公共衛生服務。我做志工時擔任醫療翻譯,幫華裔美國人接受這樣的檢測,然後給他們解釋檢測結果的意義。因此,我個人可以證明,為華裔美國人提供這種健康資源非常重要。 華裔美國人還有一個很大的特點,就是他們如何應付精神壓力。研究顯示在美國族群中,亞裔美國人,尤其是華裔美國人,求助於心理學專家最為勉強。他們常常不願意說出心理問題,例如憂鬱症,反而把這些症狀當作身體上的不適,例如疲倦。這反映華裔美國社區對心理健康抱著忽視的態度。為了好好地照顧華裔美國人的健康,心理健康也是一個不能忽視的因素。 總之,透過提高華裔美國社區對身心健康風險的認識,我們才能解決這些問題。 參考文獻References: Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander.
